Position Overview

Community Building Services is seeking a dynamic and culturally engaged individual to serve as a Part-Time Computer Class Instructor. This role supports the planning, coordination, and implementation of computer class curriculum to help community members build technical skills.

Job Working Title: Computer Class Instructor
Agency: Community Building Services
Schedule: Saturdays, a two hour time period between 9:00 am – 2:00 pm  

Administrative Office: 1578 W 1700 S, Salt Lake City, UT 84104

Program Site: Columbus Adult Education & Youth Programs, 1860 S 300 E, Salt Lake City, UT 84115

Employment Type: This position is part-time, grant-funded, and CBS makes no guarantee, either expressed or implied, that the position will continue for the duration of the grant. Should CBS receive an extension of the grant, continued employment is at the discretion of CBS.

Salary Range: $16 – $20 hourly | CBS job classification & Salary Structure, DOE & Funding Availability (Refer to CBS Employee Handbook)
Work Schedule: Maximum 3 hours weekly with flexible schedule, including evenings/weekends

Job Summary 

The Computer Class Instructor serves in developing and teaching curriculum that will build the technical skills of participants, adapting to the needs of the program. Through a two-hour Saturday class, participants will be introduced to essential skills, including basics in computer navigation, using Google tools, Microsoft Word and Excel, email setup and use, keyboard shortcuts, password safety, and more. The instructor should have a strong familiarity with these different technical areas, an ability to help others learn and navigate through them, and a sense of what else will be relevant to learn. There will be a 1-hour session for planning and a 2-hour class on Saturdays. 

Required Qualifications:

  • Associate Degree and/or experience in Computing, or a related field.
  • Strong technical proficiency. 
  • Teaching experience
  • Proficiency in English (spoken and written).
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check. 
  • Reliable Transportation 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computing or related discipline.
  • Experience working with diverse communities in a cultural or educational setting.
  • Experience working with immigrant/refugee communities
  • Bilingual (e.g., Nepali & English)
  • Experience in nonprofit or community programming
  • Teaching Certification, experience in teaching and mentoring
  • First Aid/CPR certification

Program Instruction

  • Plan, design, and deliver educational classes and workshops 
  • Build positive relationships with participants, being open to questions and guiding them through.

  • Engage well with the participants, making sure everyone gets the support they need.

Curriculum Development

  • Develop relevant and age-appropriate curriculum.
  • Ensure programming reflects community values and cultural relevance.
  • Focus on building up new skills and maintaining existing ones. 

Monitoring, Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate documentation, including attendance records, activity logs, and feedback reports.
  • Monitor participation and track progress and outcomes.
  • Support evaluation and reporting requirements for programs and grants.

Professionalism & Compliance

  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Follow CBS policies, procedures, and code of conduct.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of participant and organizational information.
  • Attend required meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities.
  • Represent CBS professionally in community settings and events.

Position Type: This position is an “At Will” FLSA non-exempt employee, not eligible for CBS benefits, and must work on a required basis as a volunteer, and hours will be determined when there is funding. An “at will” employee who may be terminated for any reason, without notice, and without a pre-termination hearing.

Work Environment:

This position involves both office-based tasks and on-site program coordination. Repetitively standing, moving, bending, etc. Spending time looking at screens.
